MILLION
DOLLAR MISTAKE |
|
|
 |
|
|
|
|
Research by the Alliance for Excellent Education clearly outlines the high
cost of high school dropouts
and the
economic impact not only on the dropouts themselves, but the
subsequent impact on the local
and national
economy as well. Over the course of a lifetime, a college
graduate will earn, on average,
$1 million more than
a high school dropout. Dropping out is literally a
million-dollar mistake.

Without question, many of the millions of youth who have dropped out of
school have talent, ability, and
aspirations for a better future and can benefit from
being connected to a supported pathway to postsecondary credentials. This tremendous pool
of talent
and potential, if properly supported and channeled, can help close
the
skills gap in
this country and greatly contribute to our nation’s productivity and
competitiveness.

Postsecondary Pathways to Good Jobs for Young High School Dropouts:

and the Challenges, Center for American Progress, October
