A
NOTE FROM OUR TEAM |
 |
When do students
decide to drop out of school?
Below is the story of one young man who made that decision in the 8th
grade—and
what changed his mind. With your support, Futures for Kids will make a
difference
for many more Thomas Baileys across North Carolina this year.

THOMAS
STAYS IN SCHOOL |

Thomas Bailey had no interest in school. With no personal stake in
his education, the 8th grader at Mendenhall Middle
School in Greensboro informed his teacher that he planned to drop
out when he got to the 9th grade. The teacher, |
Technology Education instructor William Wall, asked Thomas about his
interests and found out he liked to work on cars. Mr. Wall then used
the F4K program to show Thomas the education programs available at
Guilford Tech for auto technicians, where Thomas learned he needed
to stay in school to qualify for those programs.
No longer at risk of dropping out, Thomas is currently applying to
the auto tech program at Weaver Academy in Greensboro. In addition,
Mr. Wall has connected with both F4K and Guilford Tech to discuss
the scholarship program offered by Guilford Tech for some of their
college tech prep programs, including auto technology.

F4K has a new Director of Corporate Relations—meet Ann Turnbill!
Since graduating from NC State in 1989, Ann has been active in business
development in both the nonprofit and the corporate world where she worked
for Holly Hill Hospital, American Heart Association, and Wake Education
Partnership. These roles have included identifying, building, and
maintaining strong relationships with community leaders and elected
officials to meet annual goals, work closely with executive teams on the
strategic direction of companies and manage fundraising campaigns. Ann is
responsible for cultivating and nurturing relationships with current and
potential corporate, foundation, and government funders. She plans to
increase F4K’s donor base while raising awareness across NC. When Ann is not
working, she is usually outside playing with her son, Alden and their sweet
dog Gracie. |
