 GRAD PROJECT S-U-C-C-E-S-S

Casey Barbour has always had a passion for working with kids and the ways medical care can improve their lives. In fact, for her NC Graduation Project she is spending time with an autistic boy and his mother to understand treatment options for autistic children and the impact of early intervention.

When she was looking for a job shadowing opportunity to complete her Graduation Project, she first thought of the pediatric unit at Rex Healthcare where she had participated in the VolunTeen program for two summers. After learning Futures for Kids was available to her at South Johnston High School, Casey connected with F4K Career Coach Elizabeth Rochin. As Clinical Manager for the Perinatal, Postpartum and Pediatric Departments at Rex Healthcare, Liz was able to give Casey the chance to experience a day as a nurse, with all the demands and rewards of the job.

Through her job shadow at Rex, Casey had the opportunity to ask questions and experience firsthand the joy of a child’s smile at being discharged from the hospital. She also learned about roles and responsibilities within pediatric care that were different from what she thought, and now has more options to consider as she moves forward with her education and plans for a nursing career.

 WHERE IS THE NCGP?

So is there a NC Graduation Project? Why are some students required to complete one while others are not?

While there is no state-mandated Graduation Project and will not be until the General Assembly has had a chance to determine the best course of action
(check out the DPI website for more information), local school boards have the flexibility to move forward with the Graduation Project requirement. Around 80% of the school systems in North Carolina have chosen this option, helping their students develop workforce-ready skills and experience.

F4K is working to support these students by providing them access to online mentors in hundreds of career areas, as well as electronic portfolios to store and manage their Graduation Projects. For questions on utilizing F4K for the Graduation Projects, contact us at

IT TAKES TWO...

To make a kid go right?

At Citizen Schools, volunteers from throughout the community share what they know and love with kids in real-world projects. North Carolina's students have the opportunity to learn about Starbucks marketing, NASCAR careers, and law and government with Kids Voting.

F4K and Citizen Schools have teamed up to utilize the F4K program at the Citizen School campuses in Charlotte, Durham and Vance. F4K will reinforce the Citizen School messages of educational relevance, personal achievement and responsibility while allowing administrators to get a more accurate read of their students’ interests and tailor the program accordingly..

For more information about Citizen Schools in North Carolina, visit their web site.

 SAY WHAT?

“I know anyone who attends your session [at the NC School Counselors’ Conference] will begin to realize what a jewel the Futures for Kids program is for students and parents.”
