UNICORNS FOR A WEEK |

|
|
|
Twenty
hand-picked 7th graders from rural,
northeastern North Carolina used F4K as part of a summer
program at the North Carolina School of Science and
Mathematics last month. NCSSM designed the program to
encourage future “unicorns” from traditionally
under-represented counties and will use F4K to follow up
with the students through the next several years. |

Because Victoria is a quiet, intelligent, well behaved student who
doesn't call attention to herself, she probably doesn't get the
"kudos" and recognition she should at times. I am grateful that
Ms. Simonette has recognized her positive attributes and I truly
appreciate the time she has taken to coach and mentor her.
Please tell Ms. Simonette that I sincerely appreciate the
interest she has taken in Victoria. I really think she makes a
difference and Victoria looks forward to their conversations
everyday. |

N.C. graduation rate flat
State Board of Education Chairman Howard Lee challenged schools and
communities to provide the encouragement, support and expectations students
need to stay in school.

Students need more help in charting their futures
A majority of the class of 2008, nearly 65 percent, will join their
classmates this fall at a college or university because many simply don’t
know what else to do with their lives. Sadly, many still will not know what
they want to do when they complete their studies.
